Why is it necessary to use a special grinding machine for battery anode materials?
In simple terms: The anode materials of batteries (such as Petroleum coke, graphite, silicon-carbon, hard carbon, etc.) have extremely high requirements for the purity, particle size, morphology and safety of the powder. Ordinary ore grinding mills simply cannot meet these requirements, and dedicated grinding mills must be used.
The reason for using a dedicated grinding machine is mainly due to the following important factors:
Zero tolerance for impurities, ordinary mills will cause “iron contamination”.
Iron impurities can cause short circuits within the battery’s internal circuit, shorten the battery’s lifespan, and even lead to thermal runaway. Therefore, when processing the negative electrode materials of the battery, iron impurities must not be introduced.
The particle size requirement is finer and the particle size distribution must be extremely narrow
Negative electrode material: Generally, ultrafine powder of 3 to 20μm is required, and the particle size distribution should be narrow. If it is too coarse, the battery charging and discharging will be slow and the capacity will be low. If it is too fine, the specific surface area will be too large, and there will be many side reactions due to liquid absorption and expansion
The crystal morphology of graphite must not be damaged
The negative electrode graphite requires a flake/spherical structure to ensure: high density, good electrical conductivity, and lithium-ion intercalation speed
Explosion-proof and anti-static are hard and fast safety requirements
Graphite and silicon-carbon anode powders are flammable and explosive, and are highly prone to generating static electricity. During the grinding process, if the dust concentration is too high, they may explode and catch fire.
Low moisture content, closed and dust-free production
Specialized mills are generally integrated in grinding, drying and classification, operating in a fully enclosed manner, without absorbing moisture, oxidizing or leaking dust.
